Going back to the early 1990's and the dawn of fanfics posted to the Internet
there has been this debate between those who think that fanworks should be
letter perfect to the source material and those who want to take characters
in a new direction or explore alternate possibilities.
Even to this day it gets really heated. With the advent of forums that allow people to
post whatever they want unfettered... ... I don't want to get into that.
I'll just stick to stuff from way back when.
